The tractor was huge and brutal. Every flower on the roadside was being cut down, and I bawled my eyes out watching something so beautiful disappear in front of me. I was five. It was terrifying.

I grew up in Norway, where nature is part of everyday life. A lot of time alone on skis, and later the same feeling at sea — adjusting to wind, movement and light, learning to trust instinct more than control.

For thirty-five years I have photographed places and the people who keep them: hotels and restaurants, farms and industry, kitchens, islands, and the long light of the north. I am a contributing photographer to Condé Nast Traveller, and work regularly for House & Garden, Soho House, COMO Hotels, Travel + Leisure and The Thinking Traveller.

My book Tre Contrade — Reclaiming Sicilian Memories was published in Milan in 2026, after six years photographing one house below Etna.
